Year after year, the AP Chemistry exam remains one of the most challenging Advanced Placement exams. The average score has remained remarkably consistent over years (2.8 in 2009) and it remains among the lowest for the high-volume exams. 2  While the fraction of students scoring between 3-5 has remained fairly consistent, there has been a significant rise in the number of students taking the test, who likely are completely unprepared.  Students who scored a 1 on the test has risen from about 24% of the total 2005-2007, to nearly 30% of the total in 2008 and 2009.  However, in absolute terms, the number of students achieving a 4 or 5, has gone up significantly.  Clearly there is a gap in the both the quality and quantity of instruction.

The test is three hours and five minutes in duration and is broken into two sections. Section 1 includes 75 multiple-choice questions that need to be completed in 90 minutes. No calculators are allowed. Section 2 is the free-response section. Part A consists of three quantitative problems where calculators are permitted with a time limit of 55 minutes. Part B also consists of three problems, two of which are essays, but no calculators are permitted and the time limit is only 40 minutes. Each section is worth 50% of the overall grade. 1
